Movie Night - Western Monarch Butterflies: Protecting Our Pollinators.

Hallberg Butterfly Gardens is excited to host a pop-up movie night in the Gravenstein Apple Orchard! We will be showing Ian Nelson’s latest film, Western Monarch Butterflies: Protecting Our Pollinators. This will be a picnic-style event; bring your blanket or camping chairs, along with snacks. We’ll provide the popcorn!

Sunday the 28th, from 7:30 to 9 pm, suggested donation $5-10 per person. Donations are accepted on our website and in person. Don't forget your blanket or chairs! Registration is NOT required.

Accessibility: Pressed gravel along the orchard will create a flat, stable surface for wheelchair access. Minor bumps and uneven spots should be noted.

Feel free to contact us via email with any questions: info@hallbergbutterflygardens.org

About the Film:

Western Monarch Butterflies: Protecting Our Pollinators.

The significant decline of the western monarch butterfly population is a concerning indicator of the overall health of many pollinator species in the western United States. Conservationists and dedicated community members are making considerable efforts to restore these vital species by improving natural habitats and establishing pollinator-friendly gardens.

Ian Anthony Nelson is a filmmaker from Santa Rosa, California. A lifelong passion for observing and learning about wildlife in their natural habitats has shaped his work. Ian has collaborated with organizations such as Pepperwood Foundation, American Bird Conservancy, Kaua’i Endangered Seabird Recovery Project, Pacific Rim Conservation, Bay Nature, Golden Gate Audubon Society, and others on various films. His partnerships with environmental and wildlife organizations have helped raise global awareness of the diverse ecosystems and species on Earth and highlight efforts to protect and preserve the environment. www.iananelson.com

International Monarch Monitoring Blitz - Workshop! (Day 2 of 2)

Join us for a two-day workshop exploring the world of monarch butterflies in Sonoma County! Don't miss the chance to delve into the fascinating life cycle of these incredible creatures and discover the vital role of California native milkweed. Participate in an interactive field day within Sonoma County Regional Parks, where you'll make meaningful observations for the International Monarch Monitoring Blitz and contribute to an important cause. Experience the blend of education and conservation, and leave inspired to protect these beautiful butterflies!

This event is free. Registration is required - Click here to sign up!

The International Monarch Monitoring Blitz is a call to action for individuals, organizations, and community scientists across North America to unite to conserve monarch butterflies and their dependent habitats. Participating in the Monarch Blitz entails tracking your observations of the monarch butterfly. If you encounter a monarch egg, caterpillar, and/or adult or milkweed, regardless of location, near the end of July or the beginning of August, you’re encouraged to share your observation with one of several Community Science programs. We will use INaturalist.org for the workshop, making it as easy to upload observations as it is to post on social media.

What to Bring:

    • Camera (phone)

    • Layered clothing for cool to warm weather

    • Comfortable walking shoes for uneven ground

    • Water bottle (drinking water not provided)

    • Sunscreen/hat

    • Optional: notebook, magnifying glass, binoculars.

Day 1 (July 12th) 10 am - 12 pm

  • Location: Hallberg Butterfly Gardens 8687 Oak Grove Ave Sebastopol, CA 95472

  • Description: Review the lifecycles of Monarch butterflies and California native milkweed, how to make observations on the INaturalist app or Inaturalist.org, and instructions to participate in the International Monarch Bioblitz (July 25th-August 3rd).

  • Accessibility: The garden entrance has level gravel paths, shallow potholes, and bumps (gopher activity). Gravel road transitions to narrow dirt paths, and shallow stairs navigate a moderate hillside.

  • Parking: Gravel lot. We suggest arriving 10 minutes early to get settled and use the restroom.

Day 2 (July 26th) 10 am - 12 pm

  • Location: Crane Creek: 5000 Pressley Rd, Santa Rosa, CA 95404

  • Description: Participants will meet at Crane Creek to learn about native milkweed in Sonoma County Regional Parks and record observations of native milkweed and monarch butterflies for the International Monarch Blitz (July 25th - August 3rd).

  • Accessibility: The Milkweed sites involve hiking a minimum ¾ - 1 mile on park trails, which can sometimes be rocky or uneven.

  • Parking: Gravel lot. We suggest arriving 10 minutes early to get settled and use the restroom.

Moth Night - 7th Annual

On the first night of National Moth Week 2025, guests are invited to walk the Gardens’ trails under a waning crescent moon.

The event is not a guided tour but will be hosted by our Curator, Meghan Ashley Peterman.

After a Welcome Orientation, guests are free to come and go as they please—with the company of a Moth Night event map. Stroll the garden trails, join scheduled events, or follow Meghan as she explores! Our UV light stations typically see “the peak” of moth activity between 10 pm and 11 pm, but we understand if you leave early for bed!

Visit our Moth Night page for more information.

Bring in The Beneficial Bugs

Bring in The Beneficial Bugs

Did you know that over 90% of the bugs we see in the garden are actually beneficial? Inviting beneficial bugs is one of the best ways to increase the overall health of the garden, while significantly reducing the pests. In this class you will learn about who the most common beneficials are, what they're doing, and how to keep them around. This class is ideal for a gardener of any level.

This is a free event, and registration is required.

Meet your instructor:

The environmentalist and green thumb behind Plant Harmony–Suzanne Bontempo educates gardeners, garden clubs, agencies, and private companies in the North Bay (and online) on how to grow and manage healthy homes and gardens. She began her career in the gardening industry over 25 years ago as a retail associate for a landscape supply business. Then, she worked for a women-owned landscape contractor business as a gardening consultant and in retail garden center management. Visit plantharmony.org for more information about Suzanne and her services.

What to Bring:

  • Layered clothing for cool to warm weather

  • Comfortable walking shoes for uneven ground

  • Water bottle (drinking water not provided)

  • Sunscreen/hat

  • Optional: notebook, magnifying glass, binoculars.

  • Accessibility: the appropriateness of the walk and talk for children, etc.

    • The garden entrance has level gravel paths, shallow potholes, and bumps (gopher activity). Gravel road transitions to narrow dirt paths, and shallow stairs navigate a moderate hillside.
